Super Micro surges after $60B in orders and margin upgrade tied to SpaceX work

Super Micro Computer’s stock jumped sharply after the server maker disclosed a large inflow of new orders and a meaningful uplift to its June-quarter margin outlook. In a preliminary business update on July 21, 2026, the company said its gross margin and adjusted gross margin are now expected to land between 15% and 17%, up from an earlier projection in May that placed margins near the low single digits.

What the update revealed

The company said its revised margin view for the fiscal fourth quarter reflects a more favorable customer and product mix. For the quarter that ended June 30, Super Micro said revenue should settle at the low end of its previously issued guidance range of $11.0 billion to $12.5 billion. That sits below the LSEG analyst consensus of $11.67 billion.

Super Micro also reported record backlog levels at the close of its 2026 fiscal year and said it booked more than $60 billion in new orders during the fiscal fourth quarter. Management noted these orders will be fulfilled over upcoming quarters, rather than delivered immediately.

The company said it plans to host an earnings call on Aug. 11 to provide a fuller accounting of results.

AI demand and customer ties, including SpaceX

Management highlighted demand for servers populated with Nvidia graphics processing units, which are commonly used to run large-scale AI models. That surge in interest for AI-optimized hardware is benefiting Super Micro and other server vendors that assemble systems around high-performance GPUs.

During the quarter, CEO Charles Liang publicly referenced work with SpaceX and XAI, writing on X that he was “proud to co-build another new Gigawatt AI datacenter for @SpaceX and @XAI within a year.” The company’s statement did not disclose detailed contract terms or delivery timing for any specific customer projects.

The broader corporate context noted in the update: SpaceX acquired Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI in an all-stock transaction earlier this year and that entity is now referred to as SpaceXAI. SpaceX also owns and operates the social platform X.

Market reaction and peer moves

Following the disclosure, Super Micro shares rose roughly 15% in the session. The momentum in AI infrastructure demand lifted some rivals as well: Dell shares advanced about 5% in extended trading and Hewlett Packard Enterprise gained approximately 4%, according to the company’s market-summary notes.

Investors reacted to the combination of a large new-order tally, an improved margin outlook and the company’s comment pointing to hyperscale AI customers. Analysts and market participants will watch the Aug. 11 call for details on order composition, expected delivery cadence and how much of the backlog is tied to AI datacenter builds versus more conventional enterprise purchases.

Why margins matter for server suppliers

Gross margin is a key profitability metric for hardware vendors that often operate on thin margins when competing on volume. Super Micro’s wider margin guidance signals higher-value sales or a shift in product mix toward more profitable configurations — especially systems built around GPUs and other AI accelerators.

Server makers that capture large-scale AI deployments can benefit not only from immediate unit sales but also from multi-quarter follow-on orders, services, and supply agreements. Super Micro’s statement that new orders will be delivered across future quarters underscores the multi-period nature of building out AI datacenters.

Outlook and what to watch next

Key items for investors and industry watchers ahead of the company’s earnings call include the breakdown of the $60 billion in new orders by customer type and product category, the timeline for deliveries, and any margin drivers management can quantify beyond the general comment about customer and product mix. Observers will also seek clarity on exposure to major hyperscalers and system integrators, and whether supply constraints or component pricing shifts are influencing the updated margin range.

Super Micro’s stronger-than-expected preliminary results provide a fresh data point on the continued strength of AI infrastructure demand. The company’s performance, along with moves in peer stocks, highlights how the market is rewarding vendors that secure large GPU-based system deployments and favorable contract terms.

Super Micro is scheduled to provide a fuller accounting of its June-quarter results and backlog details on Aug. 11.
