
Garmin’s new Cirqa band finally arrives after months of rumor. The device strips away a display but retains the bulk of Garmin’s health and training features, offered at a $199 price point and without a mandatory subscription. It targets users who want deep physiological metrics and automatic tracking in a minimal form factor, while relying on the Garmin Connect app as the interface for most interactions.
Hardware and design
The Cirqa is a pod-and-strap design with a detachable sensor pod and a 27mm-wide strap. The band is offered in two size ranges (Small/Medium and Large/XL), and the unit weighs about 20 g. Garmin sells an optional biceps band in two sizes for $59. Color options include black, grey, red/pink and navy blue, and the quick-release pod lets users move the sensor between bands.
On the pod’s side is a physical button used for manual workout starts, snoozing alarms and toggling certain modes. The sensor module uses Garmin’s Elevate Gen4 optical heart-rate hardware. Garmin’s Gen5 sensor — used on its higher-end watches — adds medically certified ECG and some accuracy improvements in edge cases; Cirqa’s Gen4 sensor lacks ECG but supports heart-rate, SpO2, skin temperature, HRV and other nightly metrics.
Garmin claims up to 10 days of battery life and uses the company’s proprietary charging port, with the cable terminating in USB-C. A small LED on the pod can be double-tapped to show battery status, and the band will vibrate when you use the Find My Band feature from the app.
Software, daily metrics and the app experience
Because Cirqa has no display, Garmin Connect becomes the primary interface. The app shows an Essentials tile at the top, followed by an “In Focus” area and customizable at-a-glance tiles for heart rate, Body Battery, sleep, HRV trends and more. Sleep tracking includes phases and a smart-wake feature, and the device supports sleep coaching and sleep alignment insights already present on other recent Garmin wearables.
Cirqa exposes the same core health metrics found on many Garmin devices: continuous heart rate and HRV, nightly skin-temperature readings, SpO2, respiration rate, step and calorie tracking, nap detection, stress monitoring and women’s cycle tracking. It also reports training-oriented metrics such as VO2max estimates, Training Readiness, Acute Load and Training Effect, and it integrates with Garmin’s broader ecosystem for unified training status and Physio TrueUp.
Some features are available without extra cost. Garmin does offer a Garmin Connect+ subscription with additional structured-workout capabilities and app features, but the device ships as fully functional for general tracking without a required subscription.
Workout tracking: three modes and some early limitations
Workouts on Cirqa can be recorded in three ways: automatic detection, manual start via the side button, or a manual start from the Garmin Connect app (where you can choose from 80+ sports). The band supports Connected GPS — it uses the phone for location and mapping — and can broadcast heart rate over ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart.
In initial testing, automatic activity detection worked but showed some inconsistencies. The reviewer reported an automatically detected run that did not appear in the app for an hour; a subsequent auto-detected run appeared after roughly 15–20 minutes and required confirmation of the activity type. Attempts to trim incorrect start/end portions of a detected activity did not behave reliably.
The side button is configurable to always start a selected sport when pressed and to enable phone GPS during the activity. However, the live activity display in the Garmin Connect app is intentionally minimal for non-Connect+ users. Without a subscription the live view offers limited fields, and even with Connect+ the app does not show maps or fully customizable live stat pages. The reviewer found the absence of a real-time heart-rate readout and richer live dashboards to be a significant limitation compared with competitors that provide robust live views at lower price points.
Other issues noted include erratic changes in Training Readiness values during the early testing period and an unexpected lack of automatic sync to third-party platforms such as Strava or TrainingPeaks. Garmin’s automatic sport detection is described as limited for some activities, and the reviewer plans a deeper analysis on recognition accuracy for commuting-style rides and stop-start activities.
What Cirqa delivers — and what remains to be tested
At $199, Cirqa offers a compact, screenless option that brings most of Garmin’s recent health tracking capabilities into a band form factor. It supports a comprehensive set of overnight and daily metrics, automatic and manual workout recording, and integration within Garmin’s training ecosystem. The lack of ECG and use of the Gen4 sensor are consistent with its price and target market; Garmin has included skin-temperature sensing and other advanced metrics despite the lower-cost sensor module.
Early impressions highlight strengths in the data set and ecosystem integration, along with areas that need polish: faster and more reliable automatic activity detection, richer live workout displays without an upsell, and dependable third‑party sync. The reviewer received a media loaner from Garmin and expects a full in-depth review to follow, covering heart-rate accuracy, automatic workout reliability and longer-term battery behavior.
