
Intel’s July earnings showed the company capturing a surge in AI-driven data-center demand, producing its fastest quarterly revenue growth since 2011 and sending shares sharply higher. The results underscore how immediate demand for AI compute is translating into materially better financials for a legacy chipmaker that is also racing to expand manufacturing capacity and win foundry customers.
Q2 results and what’s driving the growth
Intel reported $16.1 billion in revenue and adjusted earnings per share of $0.42 for the second quarter, beating LSEG consensus estimates of $14.42 billion and $0.21, respectively. Revenue rose 25% year-over-year — the company’s strongest quarterly growth since the third quarter of 2011 — and the stock jumped as much as 11% in extended trading.
The uplift was led by Intel’s data-center business, where revenue climbed 59% to $6.3 billion. Intel said clients are buying more server CPUs and accelerators to fuel AI workloads, a trend CEO Lip-Bu Tan summarized as “AI is driving unprecedented demand for compute.” Intel’s client computing group, which sells PC chips, also showed improvement with revenue up 13% to $8.9 billion.
Supply constraints, long-term deals and foundry traction
Management told investors it is supply constrained: data-center customers are demanding more chips than Intel can currently produce. To lock in business and preserve pricing in a hot market, Intel said it has negotiated 10 long-term agreements with customers that include a mix of volume and price commitments.
Intel’s foundry business reported $5.8 billion in sales, up 31% year-over-year, reflecting early momentum as the company expands third-party manufacturing. But Intel has so far been cautious in naming large foundry clients: Fortinet was disclosed recently as a customer under an older process node. The company also said its latest manufacturing node, 14A, is progressing ahead of comparable points in prior technology cycles.
Margins, capex and the manufacturing pivot
Gross margin recovered to 42% in the quarter, a sharp improvement from a year-ago comparison, which the company attributed to higher volumes and a greater mix of higher-margin products. Intel signaled a “meaningful increase” in capital expenditures next year as it accelerates its foundry build-out and internal road map to meet surging demand for AI compute.
Executives framed the strategy as a pivot from being primarily an integrated device manufacturer to also operating a larger third-party foundry business. That shift requires heavy near-term investment to add capacity while improving process yields and node performance — all areas investors and customers will watch closely.
Implications for Intel’s roadmap and capacity planning
The clear near-term implication is that Intel will prioritize capacity for AI-related products: server CPUs, accelerators and selected foundry customers. That may accelerate production ramps for mature, high-volume nodes even as the company pushes development on newer nodes like 14A. If supply constraints persist, Intel’s commercial deals and higher-margin sales mix could support both earnings strength and the capital investment needed to expand wafer capacity.
However, converting demand into long-term competitive advantage depends on execution: meeting yield and throughput targets in new facilities, securing additional marquee foundry clients, and managing pricing through multi-year agreements in a market that could reprice if supply catches up.
Competitive dynamics with Nvidia and AMD
Intel’s results come amid a broader AI-hardware boom dominated in public discourse by dedicated accelerators from rivals such as Nvidia and GPU and CPU offerings from AMD. Intel’s strength this quarter shows incumbency in server CPUs still matters, and that customers are buying a mix of compute architectures for AI pipelines. But retaining and growing share will require Intel to prove its accelerators and foundry services can compete on performance, software support and total cost of ownership.
Long-term contracts and supply constraints give Intel short-term negotiating leverage, but competitive pressure from specialist accelerator vendors and other foundries means Intel must convert revenue momentum into sustained product and manufacturing differentiation.
Near-term outlook
For the current quarter, Intel guided to adjusted EPS of $0.38 and revenue between $15.8 billion and $16.8 billion, above analyst expectations for $15.1 billion. Management’s guidance and the disclosed long-term deals suggest the company expects demand to remain robust in the near term. Investors will watch how quickly Intel can expand capacity, ramp newer process technologies like 14A, and attract larger foundry customers — all key to determining whether this quarter’s AI tailwind becomes a durable structural improvement.
Intel’s results are an example of how the AI infrastructure boom is already reshaping the semiconductor incumbents: strong near-term revenue gains are available to firms that control sizeable server CPU franchises and can supply accelerators, but capturing an enduring role in AI hardware will hinge on manufacturing execution and competitive product performance.
